My advice here is to go to a spot that doesn't have a big opening because people will join you. I have come here a few times because I like the Solitude and the strong Verizon signal. There were numerous places there above and to west of flats one could boondock (saw perhaps 10 other spread out with plenty of room most were trailers/5th wheels). If you want to camp up on the hill to the west, just take a left and climb up smooth dirt road before taking right to the Salt Flats. 4 stars for what it is: Salt flats., nice to have seen at least once. In the evening a large parade of souped-up cars drove past, turned around around after driving a short loop on the flats and left (perhaps 50 of them ranging from 1930s to 1980s-pretty cool). When we woke up there were a couple of class Cs that had joined us over night. It seemed pretty safe, and was wide and so we were off the to side.

So, we parked at the dead-end road where the sign is just before you would drive on the flats. Also, our shoes were caked on bottoms in light salt that we had to wash off and I am sure that cars that drove on the flats at this time, had their undercarriages thoroughly caked with salt (a friend later told me that it took a few weeks to get all the salt off his car's undercarriage). So, we figured a car might be okay, but not a 7k+ lb van. We initially thought it would be fine to drive on them-there were a number of cars and a few trucks-we realized that as we walked on the flats, the stiff crust gave way to slimy mud underneath it in numerous places. Glad we did not drive our van on the flats: Below main sign another sign said "Close to Motor Vehicles Due to Wet Conditions" (see pic.).
